God sent His ultimate gift of love through His son Jesus Christ, thus showing the world what real love looked like. If that was not enough, God wrote a love letter to each person on this earth in the form of the verses in the Bible, giving us promises of what humanity can become through the power of His love.
Additionally, God outlined love in the Bible by showing how a husband should love his wife and the wife her husband. In the sections below you will find Bible scriptures that outline how God defines the meaning of love:
1 Corinthians 7:3
"Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-8,13
"Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails...But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
Ephesians 5:25-29
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.”
Ephesians 5:33
"Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
Proverbs 18:22
"He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”
Proverbs 12:4
"An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
Proverbs 31:10-12
“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
Proverbs 31:29-31
"Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
Colossians 3:19-21
"Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”
Proverbs 19:14
"Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”
1 Peter 3:1-2, 7-8
"Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear...Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous.”
Genesis 2:18
"Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
Genesis 2:21-24
"So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.' For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”
1 John 4:11-12
"Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.”
John 15:12-13
"This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
John 13:35
"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Matthew 5:33-34
"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”
Romans 12:21
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
